Re:The impact of English as a global language on non- English speakers
Good evening and happy Ramadan to my lecturers and to all my classmates.Basically, the topic which concerned the impact of English as a globallanguage on non -English speakers nations communities is quite interestingbecause we are learning English and we are non -English speakers. so thequestions always what makes English a global language? What makes English aleading candidate? Why is English the global language? The answer is actually dueto :one is geo-historicaland the other is socio-cultural .The geo-historicalreasons focus on the past and show how English reached its position ofpre-eminence.The socio cultural perspectives show why it has remaindso.Crystal(1998:24) delves into a detailed and interesting history, tracing themovement of English around the world. English is now represented in everycontinent, and in islands of the three major oceans. It is this sperad ofrepresentation which makes the application of the label "globallanguage" areality. The socio-cultural explanation looks at the way people all over the world, inmany walks of life, have come to depend on English for their well-being. Thelanguage has penetrated deeply into the international language domains ofpolitical life ,business, safety, communication, entertainment, the media andeducation. The convenience of having a lingu franca available to serve globalhuman relations and needs has come to be appreciated by millions.Several domainshave come to depend on it- the computer software industry being a prime example.Graddol (1997) emphasises the strength of the internationalisation of English. He lists the major international domains of English. They are:Working languageof international organisation and conference.Scientific publication.International banking, economic affairs and trade.Advertising for global brands.Audio-visual cultural products (eg.films, TV, popular music)International tourism .International safety(eg."airspeak","seaspeak")International Law.As a" relylanguage" in interpretation and translation.Technology transfer.Internet communication. In conclusion, a crucial lesson must be taken that we as learners we shouldmaster English and not English masters us in order to protect our identities sothat we obtain knowledge in science and technology and facilitatescommunications for trade and business. Therefore, we need to learn from the past, appreciate the present and with strength face the future.

Re Please share your reaction

Re: Please share your reaction
Alsalamualukum, how nice to share with you my interesting group my opinionabout the lecture that held by Cameron. it was really amazing and useful as wellit provides me with valuable information. As a matter of fact, i have alreadyemailed Dr.Norizan about the lectuer in the last Wednesday i told her that iam alittle bit worried about the lecture. She is kindly encouraged me to attendadvising me that the topic is familiar. When i attend the lecture i found that itwas Great.Basically, the lecturer initially illustrates the history of humancommunication and the differences between face to face communication andInternet based communication. He presents the tremendous growth in the use ofthe Internet and how this vechile has been a powerful tool for communication inthis global world. In addition ,Cameron explains good information about usingweb 2.0 paradigm for on line research,in this sense he suggestes some of thetopics which are beneficial for students to research and the value of web 2.0 inenhancing learning and teaching processes, business, industry as well as how canbe used as a lure for attracting high performing talents in stead of dependingon traditional class room seminars. The lecturer also explains the differences between web 1.0 and 2.0.Forexample, web 2.0 is about writing ,communties and XMT ,whereas web1.0 is aboutreading, companiess and HTML.Social networking tools is actually about emailforum, myspace and friendsler.Besides, there are many such aswikkis,RssReaders,Blogs and Social booking...etc.In terms of using networking facilities in language classes i tend to thinkthat it is not an easy task because it needs a drastic policy and professionalskills as well .Therefore, i can say that i will assist my students by enrichtheir learning and minimize their negative affects for the sake of fertilelearning.what do you think my classmates?Fatma Bakeer

Re CALL

Hi,i absolutely happy to have the chance to share with you all.CALL is simplyComputer assisted language learning. It focuses not on a technical descriptionof hardware and software, but rather on the pedagogical atmosphere that teachershave considered in using computers in classroom and how computers can sustainlearning and teaching foreign language and how can be an exciting and rewardingexperince since computers are used to enhance and facilitate communications, creating social and instructional environment as well.Language learners can communicate directly and conveniently with otherlearners or speakers of the target language no matter where they live and howfar they are away and what the oppropriate time which they can communicate. Allthese things are now possible with this fascinatcd technology you can click toaccess to the information from your school, work, or home so people all aroundthe world can participate to compose messages, conversations at their suitabletime just by typing at their keyboards. It also allows not only one to onecommunication, but also one to many ,allowing a teacher or student to share amessage with a small group, the whole class, a partenr class or internatonaldiscussion list of hundreds or thousands of people. In terms of the three theories namely the behaviorism CALL, cognitivismCALL,and the constructivism CALL. It is obvious that the three theories arestands on a different point of view which they are varying from theteacher-centred as in behaviorism or the student- centred as in the cognitivismor both as in the constructivism. In my point of view in applying these theoriesin learning and teaching a second language I extremely fellow what the author"Brown" had illustrated in his book "principles of language learning andteaching " is that your theory of teaching is your theory of learning "stood onits head" p.8 .

A Reflection on Using the Web Based Learning Materials
Basically according to my reflection on using the web based learning materials which I already chose the web (www.englishpage.com) I definitely came up with my opinion that the entire atmosphere to some extent seems attractive which encourages learners from over the world to become on line learners. This web based learning provide learners with individualized and personalized learning when compared to traditional class room settings. For example, in the grammar section the lessons gain and maintain learner's attention and interest as well as the most important that guides students and facilitates interaction encouraging learners to become active learners. In the vocabulary section, there is a fantastic way of expanding vocabulary for instance (Holiday Vocabulary Lessons)are presented in a nice way , consequently students have the impetus to pick up the words automatically and they are learning real English because such words sometimes are not easily accessible in books or even dictionaries. However ,in the listening part students are required to listen to some native speakers ,slangs and different conversations about different topics using audio visual aids.
In essence, the content can be described as an objective, good and the language used is accurate .Students are encouraged to acquire deep learning and develop their potential abilities by sharing through communications and interactions .The multimedia elements are available such as videos ,still images, radio which is connected to BBC channel and other interacting content forms . In terms of the font and color I think that, the font is absolutely clear and understandable, the color is quite nice, flexible so that learners do not feel boring, in other words the environment alive, amazing and interesting. In summary, I think that there is no specific web is suitable for all students because learners are different in their abilities, interests and comprehensions …etc. Each web has its advantages and disadvantages that vary from one student to another. However, in regarding to an evaluation to a web based learning we must put in our consideration that the value of any web is in relation to its content , how much students access knowledge from it.
